Marine Field Guide of the South East Pacific , The Antarctic Peninsula,Kamchatka & the Baltic Sea

Unfortunately our website was hacked in September 2007. Actually we started to put all content again into the web. We are sorry that not all information are available at the moment.

The Spanish name "Guia Marina" means "Marine Guide" in English or "Meeresführer" in German. This site was created about three years ago in close cooperation with the participation and assistance of the Institute of Marine Biology of the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) & the Antarctic Institute of Peru (INANPE). Therefore we concentrated during the first two years on marine species of Chile, Peru and the Antarctic environment.

Scientific diving and laboratory work of students, marine biologists from various institutions and freelancers, worldwide, made is possible to identify various organisms to species level. However, the identification of several organisms is still in work and a lot of material remained undescribed. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you notice miss-identifications or if you are interested in co-operation.

At the beginning of the year 2004 we included two Spanish written parts to this website. The description of the Marine Fauna and the environment of the villages Yaldad (Island of Chiloe ) and Melinka (Guaiteca islands) in the X and XI region of Chile . The first website was elaborted during a student expedition of the UACh to Chiloe, the other one was written together with artesanal divers of the Guaiteca Islands and with the assistance of the local authorities of the SERNAPESCA.

Recently in September of the same year we left the South American continent to include also photos from Kamchatka ( Russia ) and the German part of the Baltic Sea. The Kamchatka expedition resulted from an invitation of the Kamchatka Institute of the Ecology and Environment, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Dirk Schories, Ralf Grunewald and Manfred Schubert focussed in the year 2005 on Coastal Plants of the Baltic Sea as well as the Marine Fauna and Flora.

Since the beginning of 2007 Elena Clasing and Dirk Schories work together at the Universidad Austral de Chile. Therefore the most actual pictures are from South Chile.  All recent pictures are geo-referenced , most of them with an error less than 20m.
